Truckee Chili Cookoff

Truckee Chili Cookoff 2010

The Truckee Sunrise Rotary Club will hold the 2nd Annual Truckee Chili Cookoff at 11 AM on Sunday, June 27 at the Truckee Regional Park.

This community fundraiser will provide a day of family fun with chili tasting, non-stop enter-tainment, food and beverages and a host of activities for adults and children alike.

Building on last year’s successful event, there will be more chili, more food, more beer, more entertainment and more fun.

The area's best chili cooks will compete for top honors in these categories: Restaurants, Non-profits and Individuals plus Best Overall. In addition, a People’s Choice award will recognize the chili garnering the most votes from attendees and there will be an award for best cooking team theme.

A panel of area dignitaries will judge the chili and make the awards.

All proceeds benefit Truckee-North Tahoe programs addressing the needs of youth, economically disadvantaged and elderly. The Truckee Sunrise Rotary Club has been supporting our community since 1993.

Admission with unlimited chili tasting will be $ 10 for adults and free for children under 12 accompanied by an adult. Tickets will be available around the area, from any Rotarian, at the event and online here.

Last Year's Event

Almost 1,000 chili lovers witnessed a classic contest among 15 competent chili chefs fighting to the finish for the top prize at the hotly contested 1st Annual Truckee Chili Cookoff.

Taking first place in the Individual category was Ryan “Happy” Gilmore, successful in his first outing.

First honors in the Non-profit category went to the team from Tahoe Forest Hospital led by Matt Pierz, Executive Chef.

Jax Truckee Diner won in the Restaurant category which was surprising since the establish-ment wasn't open at the time. Owner Bud Haley credited Executive Chef Melinda Dorn with creating the award-winning recipe. Jax Truckee Diner also won the People’s Choice award based upon the votes of the attendees at the event.

The Grand Champion of this first ever Truckee Chili Cookoff was the young team “Poets on Payday”, Lyle Poulin, Aaron Oropeza and Michael Kugler. They say the team name was taken from the chili cookoff episode of The Simpsons.
